New York State AFL-CIO Endorses
Bill Owens for CD
23!
The 2 ½ million member New York State
AFL-CIO today announced its endorsement of Democrat Bill Owens
in the race for the open seat in the 23rd Congressional
District. New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes
issued the following statement:
"While Dede Scozzafava was in the race, the
organized labor movement was evenly divided in its support of
Ms. Scozzafava and Bill Owens. Now that Dede Scozzafava
has dropped out of the race, labor's choice to represent the
23rd Congressional District is crystal clear. Bill Owens
has the full support and resources of the New York State AFL-CIO
at his disposal.
"Bill Owens will be a strong voice in Washington
for Upstate New York's working men and women. He has spent
his career helping to create over 2,000 jobs and working to
revitalize Upstate New York's local economy. Bill Owens
will fight to bring more jobs upstate, reform our nation's
broken health care system, and turn the page on George Bush's
failed economic policies.
Bill Owen's opponent, Doug Hoffman, is vehemently
opposed not only to the issues important to working men and
women, such as the Employee Free Choice Act, but to the very
cause and ideals of the organized labor movement.
"Doug Hoffman opposes the job-creating Economic
Recovery Package. But most important, he still supports the same
economic policies that got us into this historic economic
downturn.
"Doug Hoffman supports a flat tax that would cut
taxes for the wealthy and shift the burden to the middle class.
He has been endorsed and financially backed by a number of
organizations that fight for the privatization of Social
Security, for unfair trade deals like CAFTA, and against raising
the minimum wage. Doug Hoffman was even endorsed by Dick Armey,
who has called for the abolition of Medicare.
"The New York State AFL-CIO and its
affiliated unions in the 23rd Congressional District will work
diligently for the election of Bill Owens. And with
labor's support for Mr. Owens, I am confident that he will
emerge victorious on Election Day."
The New York State AFL-CIO represents 80,000
union members and their families in the 23rd Congressional
District.
