Stimulus Money is Meant for Higher Education

Faculty, staff and students are joining together to demand the state allocate federal stimulus funds to Rutgers. New Jersey Senate and Assembly budget committees are meeting Tuesday and Wednesday to consider the proposed higher education budget so please complete this online petition today.

Further, we call on president McCormick, the Board of Governors, chancellors and deans, and the rest of central management to join us in focusing the full energies of the Rutgers community on constructive solutions to our budget crisis and turn away from the politics of panic and division.

Subject: Federal Stimulus is Meant for Higher Education

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Guidelines on the allocation of federal stimulus money have now been issued by the United States Department of Education. We must follow these guidelines and redirect federal funds to higher education where Congress and the President have indicated they belong.

New Jersey's budget should also do its part to stimulate recovery. State budget cuts to higher education will result in cutting jobs and courses and will erode the quality of education. This would work against the intent and purpose of the federal stimulus program.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, proposed by President Obama and passed by Congress, created a State Fiscal Stabilization Fund. Through this fund, nearly $1.1 billion of federal stimulus aid is allocated to our state for investment in K-12 and higher education. The intent, as outlined in the guidance from the Department of Education (DOE), is to avoid devastating cuts, layoffs and mitigate the need for tuition increases.
