Contract Update: Still Talking
After exchanging proposals last week, URA-AFT and Rutgers management will meet again this Friday to continue discussing working out a deal to defer contracted raises for real job security.

Millerand quoted in Bergen Record: Rutgers unveils visitor center
[...] "We're in favor of having a good program to recruit incoming students," said Lucye Millerand, president of the Union of Rutgers Administrators. "The question is, are we in an austerity period or not?"

Other projects singled out
Millerand said her bargaining unit of almost 2,000 staffers has had wages frozen and 30 layoffs this year. She pointed out that this visitor center was not as "egregious" an expense as the $5 million lounge being built for recruiting football players or the $102 million football stadium expansion. Even so, she said, "Can we have a little more balance here?"

Report Back: Clinton Stumps for Corzine on CAC

Legislative committee chair Helen Pirrello (red jacket in insert) and health and safety chair Joyce Sagi.

In a week that featured visits to New Jersey from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, President Bill Clinton held an Oct. 20 rally at the College Ave Gym for Governor Jon Corzine’s reelection.

URA-AFT legislative committee chair Helen Pirrello reports that the capacity crowd gave Lieutenant Governor candidate Loretta Weinberg a rousing RU welcome. “But it was nothing like the noise when President Clinton and Governor Corzine took to the stage,” she said. “You could have heard the cheers all the way to Busch campus.” President Clinton reflected that he took Senator Weinberg’s bill mandating insurance companies pay for women to have at least a 48-hour hospital stay after giving birth and made it a national law. President Clinton also told those assembled that Hillary was a great fan of Coach Vivian Stringer to which the crowd replied with a rousing RU cheer in agreement. The former President said that despite the economic downturn and high unemployment New Jersey is doing better than most.

“He pointed out that Governor Corzine was able to have the Paid Family Leave bill passed, garner three percent more stimulus monies more than any other governor and provide excellent funding for education,” said Pirrello.
