Events | USA to Host First Sportsmen's Dinner
As a member of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, you belong to a community of Union hunters and fishermen who share a deep connection with the outdoors. And with your help, we will continue to build this community because every new USA member helps us all.
As part of that effort, the USA will host its Inaugural Sportsmen’s Dinner on April 30, 2009. The dinner will begin at 5:30pm at the IUOE Local 49 Hall in Minneapolis, Minn. Tickets for the Sportsmen’s Dinner are $60 and include a new or renewed USA membership.
The agenda for the evening will include various raffles, a silent auction, a video and a special presentation by Ron Schara, outdoor writer and TV host of Backroads with Ron and Raven.
If the inaugural dinner is as successful as we hope, we will work with Unions and USA members across the country to hold similar events to continue to grow this one-of-kind club. Because more members means bigger and better benefits, discounts and services. More members means USA hunting, fishing and shooting events. More members means we have a stronger, more unified voice to preserve our hunting and fishing heritage.
To learn more about this event or to make reservations, contact USA Regional Coordinator Jim Klatt at 612-331-0270 or jklatt@trcp.org. top
Addicted to Bass Fishing?
USA Partners with Ameircan Bass Anglers
Dayton Blair from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., is one step closer to the 2010 Bassmaster Classic with a first place win and $5,000 in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series bass tournament held on Percy Priest Lake. Blair`s five bass limit weighed in at 14.92 and were caught using crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. The winner keyed on a typical pre-spawn pattern. Starting deeper in the morning, Blair fished mainly points, gradually fishing shallower as the day warmed. He was rewarded with his biggest fish (a 5.53 lb. largemouth) after 2:00 pm.
Ever dream of getting paid to fish?
If you’re like Blair and the thousands of Americans who compete or dream of competing in bass tournaments, the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance and American Bass Anglers (ABA) have teamed up to create a partnership you’re going to love. The new partnership gives Union members the incredible opportunity to compete in some of the nations’ best amateur tournaments and against fellow Union brothers and sisters at the same time.
ABA has more than 37,000 members and hosts more than 1,100 bass fishing tournaments each year in 41 states. Geared toward the weekend angler, these tournaments enable fishermen to compete locally while being ranked nationally and against members of their service team. Service teams include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Homeland Security, Lady Angler, Couples and now USA.
“I have been bass fishing for a long time. I have also been a Union member for a long time, so when ABA announced the new team, it just seemed like a natural fit,” said Gary Schroeder, a long-time ABA member and the first to join the USA service team.
According to Schroeder, ABA provides newcomers to the sport the chance fish and compete as non-boaters, which he describes as “an inexpensive way to learn different techniques and tactics from some really good fisherman who enjoy sharing years of experience with other fishermen who are hungry to learn.”
To join the USA service team, an individual must be a member of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance and ABA. Thanks to this new partnership, USA members can join ABA for a discounted introductory membership fee of $18 and enjoy the following benefits:
-
Full range of ABA member benefits, including the ABA magazine
-
Opportunity to fish in local bass tournaments along with other ABA members and be ranked nationally and against other USA members
-
Opportunity to compete against members of the USA service team for 5 year-end prizes (must compete in 5 tournaments to qualify)
-
Chance to fish in the Bassmaster Open events (upon qualification and participation in Bassmaster Weekend Series) in a spot open only to USA members and to qualify to compete in the televised ESPN’s Bassmaster Elite series
“Bass fishing is a passion shared by many USA members,” said USA Executive Director Fred Myers. “We are very enthusiastic about our new affiliation with ABA, which will connect Union anglers through friendly competition and shine a stronger light on the need to protect critical fish habitat, so future generations can enjoy the same pastimes we cherish today.”
To join ABA at the discounted rate for USA members, call (888) 203-6222 from 9am-6pm (EST). top

Boilermakers Join USA as Charter Union
Hunting and fishing are more than hobbies; they’re a lifestyle that’s been handed down from generation to generation, much like the Union brotherhood. That is a lifestyle we cherish at the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance. It’s also a lifestyle shared by many members of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, which is why the USA is so proud to welcome the Boilermakers as its newest Charter Union.
“The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance is committed to delivering exceptional benefits to Union hunters and anglers that uphold their Union values, while also providing them with a strong, unified voice in conservation issues,” said Boilermaker International President Newton Jones. We’re proud to support a program that helps our hardworking men and women enjoy the activities they’re passionate about.”
As a Charter Union, the Boilermakers have joined the ranks of nine other AFL-CIO affiliated Unions (CWA, IAFF, IAMAW, IBEW, IUPAT, Roofers, SMWIA, UA, USW) in providing financial support to the USA to extend Union member benefits beyond the workplace to the woods and water.
“As an avid outdoor enthusiast and long-time Union member, I am proud to be a member of the USA and I encourage my fellow Boilermakers and brothers and sisters of all Unions to join this worthy club,” said Boilermaker International Secretary-Treasurer Bill Creeden.

Also a proud USA member and supporter, Western States International Vice President Tom Baca added “the USA is a great benefit for the many Boilermaker members who are passionate about the outdoors, providing special opportunities while helping to ensure access to quality places to hunt and fish.”
“From the very beginning, the Boilermakers helped spread the word about the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance through their website, publication and events,” said Fred Myers, Executive Director of the USA. “We are thrilled they have taken their support a step further to continue to build this unique community of Union hunters and anglers.” top
Conservation | Recreational Anglers Introduce CAST Principles to Safeguard Marine Fisheries
As large as our oceans may seem, they and the marine life that inhabit them are being placed at risk with development pressures similar to those on our public lands. The number of proposed activities is growing and includes wind and wave energy, liquefied natural gas, gas terminals, desalinization plants, oil exploration, recreation, commercial fishing and more. When not managed properly, these activities imperil not only our ocean and coastal resources, but also our recreational fishing opportunities.

Keeping a close eye on how these precious resources are managed is the Angling 4 Oceans Coalition of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, which aims to shape important coastal fisheries laws.
“We’ve seen horrible and avoidable population declines in fish and wildlife populations following the most recent energy development boom in the Intermountain West,” said TRCP President and CEO George Cooper. “Our coalition supports developing offshore energy resources, but it will not tolerate the senseless repetition of past mistakes.”
As the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources gathered for its first hearing on offshore energy development in February, the Angling 4 Oceans Coalition called on the committee to employ its “CAST principles” to promote the conservation of marine fisheries.
The “CAST Principles” are as follows:
Conservation
Conservation concerns must top all others. Those places crucial to the vitality of fish populations, recreational anglers and coastal economies should be placed off-limits to leasing. Concurrently, the Minerals Management Service, the agency responsible for overseeing offshore development, must adopt and adhere to a new standard operating procedure that strives to balance the concerns of all ocean users.
Allocation
Allocations of the royalties paid to the federal government by industry for offshore energy development must be used in ways that benefit fish and wildlife resources, including expanded marine research and fisheries management initiatives, via state and federal programs.
Science
Science-based, adaptive management strategies that respond continually to emerging information should be required for all offshore energy development projects. These strategies should begin with species inventory, include population monitoring and analysis, and carry through to the mitigation phase. Where gaps in data exist, they must not be used to justify development. Rather, they must serve to highlight areas where additional study is immediately necessary.
Transparency
Transparency must characterize the management of all public trust resources. Not only does this mean that the decisions affecting our shared aquatic species must be made in a manner that allows public oversight, it also means that public comment must be addressed and integrated during the decision-making process.
“The CAST principles are about conservation of coastal resources and associated economies today, and about a legacy for tomorrow,” said Aaron Adams, Director of Operations for the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. “The responsible approach to offshore development called for by the CAST principles ensures a healthy future.” top
