Don't balance the budget on our backs. Honor our contract.

The members of the School Board voted and approved a recommendation, at a committee meeting on Monday, April 28th, that would allow Superintendent Rudy Crew to postpone step raises and salary increases scheduled for the 2008-2009 school year.  The School Board may take additional action and vote to proceed with this recommendation at the May 21st School Board meeting.

This is unacceptable.  The District must not balance their budget shortfall on the back of teachers and education support professionals.  Our contract must be honored and funded as negotiated.

The District can find ways to balance their budget without touching our contract.  It is all about choices.

Subject: Don't balance the budget on our backs. Honor our contract.

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am an employee of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and I was appalled to learn of the School Board's recommendation to postpone the step raises and salary increases scheduled for the coming school year.

Time and time again, I have heard you state that your first priority when planning your budget was to respect your commitment to the collective bargaining agreement. Where are your priorities now?

The teachers and educational support professionals are tired of being under constant attack. We just spent months fighting to keep our health insurance, and soon after that is resolved, we receive another blow.

Times are tough and you are only making it tougher for us to work and live in Miami-Dade County. You cannot continue to use the employees of Miami-Dade County Public Schools as the solution to balance the budget.

Don't balance the budget on our backs. Honor our contract.

Sincerely,
