Urgent: Save the Auto Industry and Union Jobs

The U.S. auto industry is in crisis. Without an immediate bridge loan from Congress, domestic auto makers are headed toward immediate bankruptcy. More than 3 million jobs are at stake, many of them good paying union jobs. The loss of these manufacturing jobs and tax revenue would cripple state and local budgets and further weaken the U.S. economy.

Subject: Support an emergency bridge loan for U.S. Auto Industry

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

The American auto industry must not be forced into bankruptcy. I urge you to take immediate action to pass an emergency bridge loan to enable the domestic auto industry to continue operations. It is in every American's interest to secure the long-term stability and profitability of this industry, one that is key to the industrial sector and overall health of our economy.

The collapse of the domestic auto industry would be catastrophic. Not only would it result in the loss of nearly 3 million jobs across the country, it would further erode the tax base of hard-pressed local and state governments.

However, I do not support giving auto executives a blank check. Any loan must include requirements that will protect taxpayers and ensure accountability standards from auto executives. These should include tough limits on executive compensation, and prohibit the companies from paying dividends. Furthermore, the government must be given an equity stake in the companies to protect the interests of taxpayers.

Millions of Americans are counting on your leadership to save not only the American auto industry, but to revive our economy and make it work for everyone again. Thank you for your action on this critical issue.

Sincerely,
