Take Action: COTS Fires Three Workers & Rejects Staff Proposal
COTS management has rejected a compromise proposal from their employees to settle the question of Union recognition, and has just fired three valued employees.
The alleged reason for the firings has to do with a little known and never enforced rule that states that employees cannot be related to or living with other COTS employees they have to report to. The agency has suddenly decided to enforce this rule, and the result is that three workers have lost their jobs and the homeless have lost three tireless advocates. [Note: COTS Administration has said that these are not techincally "firings", because they have been offered to apply for other jobs in other COTS programs. We use the word firing when someone has had their job terminated. This little known rule didn't just so happened to be enforced, but appears to be blatant retaliation because of the union drive.]
Many of us in the community have been perplexed by COTS hostile reaction to its employees' democratic choice to unionize. We're asking that this injustice be corrected.

Subject: Reinstate the fired employees & Accept Fair Proposal
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I was outraged to learn that COTS has not only rejected a well-reasoned compromise proposal from the Union to settle the question of Union recognition but that your agency has also fired three valued employees.
I understand that the reason for the firings has to do with a little known and never enforced rule that states that employees cannot be related to or living with other COTS employees. Your agency suddenly decided to enforce this rule. I understand you have said they have not been "technically fired" and that they have been "offered to apply" to other jobs in in other COTS programs. But given the COTS record on workers' rights, its clear that this was retaliation because of the union drive.
Many of us in the community have been perplexed by COTS hostile reaction to its employees' democratic choice to unionize. These latest actions, however, are outrageous and unjust.
I ask that your agency immediately:
1) Reinstate all three employees to their former positions within the Family Shelters.
2) Recognize the Union or accept the Union's proposal for a community election run largely by the COTS Board of Directors' guidelines.
Sincerely,
Signed by:
