Unions: Myths and Realities | FAQ | Contact WashTech

The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers is an organization of high-tech workers and allies joining together to provide an effective voice in the legislative and corporate arenas, and to advocate for improved benefits and workplace rights.

WashTech, a local affiliate of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), is a democratic, worker-driven union for all high-tech employees. We provide a strong and effective voice for IT professionals both in public policy and in the workplace. Our members come from all sectors of the local high-tech industry - permanent employees, agency contractors, and independent contractors.

We work on our members' behalf through legislative advocacy, offering news and information services, high-tech training programs in our Seattle facility, and our proactive efforts to improve working conditions for all high-tech workers.

WashTech was founded in 1998 to address problems faced in today's high-tech workplaces by long-term temporary employees, or "permatemps." IT firms increasingly reply upon these contract workers and independent contractors, who may work at a company full time for a year or more, yet without receiving job security or benefits. Arguing that permatemps deserve the same benefits as regular employees of companies like Microsoft, Boeing and Amazon, a group of Microsoft temps decided to form a union.
