Protect America's Jobs

Please send the letter below to urge your members of Congress to oppose any legislative effort to increase the number of H-1b visas.  The proposal would be included in the Omnibus Spending bill for FY05 in HR 4818.

Congress is giving last-minute consideration to legislation that would increase the number of high-tech and professional foreign guest workers who can work in the United States even though U.S. workers in the occupations most affected already suffer high unemployment rates.  The legislation is part of an agenda by the Bush administration and congressional allies to enable businesses to hire foreign workers they can pay less than U.S. workers under the H-1b visa program.

This would allow foreign graduates with advanced degrees from American colleges or universities access to professional and technical jobs here. While giving companies a supply of lower wage workers, the measure also would worsen today’s job crisis for professional and technical workers whose unemployment rates are already at record levels.   Please act now:

Subject: Act to Protect U.S. Jobs

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

A last minute effort is under way in Congress to pass legislation to increase the number of high-tech and professional guest workers admitted to the United States to work in occupations suffering from high domestic unemployment. The proposal will be included in the Omnibus Spending bill for FY05 in HR 4818.

The proposal would allow foreign graduates with advanced degrees from American colleges or universities access to professional and technical occupations. Already, 1 million guest workers are in this country under existing visa programs.

When so many U.S. workers are unemployed, particularly among our professional and technical workforce, it is an outrage that legislators would even consider such a proposal.

We need economic strategies to create jobs and not proposals that allow employers to hire H-1b visa holders and pay them less than their U.S. counterparts.

I urge you to strongly oppose any effort to bring in more technical guest workers and to take whatever action you can to make sure this proposal is defeated.

Sincerely,
