Tell Congress: Say 'No' to Colombia Trade Deal

Colombia's unionists operate in a climate of fear in their country. In 2007 alone, 39 Colombian trade unionists were murdered.

And the Colombian government continues to systematically undermine union members' rights--their freedom to form unions, bargain collectively, go on strike and criticize the government.

Tell your representative to oppose a trade deal with Colombia until their government makes real progress in protecting the lives and rights of union members.

Subject: Oppose the Colombia FTA

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world for a trade unionist--well over 2,000 union leaders and members have been murdered there since 1991. And the government routinely ignores or violates internationally recognized workers' rights.

Yet the Bush administration has sent a trade deal with Colombia to Congress.

Congress should not support a trade agreement with Colombia until that government meets an established set of human rights benchmarks. These benchmarks include:

--Completely severing all ties with paramilitary organizations and international criminal networks, which are responsible for most of the murders of union members.

--Making significant advances in the investigation and prosecution of crimes against trade unionists and providing meaningful and adequate protection for unions and trade unionists.

--Bringing Colombia's labor laws into conformity with International Labor Organization (ILO) core labor standards and providing full support for the newly created ILO office in Colombia to monitor labor rights compliance and pursue investigations of key cases of assassinations of trade unionists.

Again, I urge you to oppose a trade agreement with Colombia until their government takes strong action to stop the violence against trade union members and ends the government's assaults on union rights.

Sincerely,

Background Information

According to a recent AFL-CIO report, although the number of trade unionist deaths in Colombia decreased last year, the Colombian government still is doing far too little.

Workers' Rights, Violence and Impunity in Colombia shows the combination of ongoing assassinations, death threats and violence against union family members creates a climate of fear for trade unionists that makes it impossible for them to fully and confidently exercise their freedom to form unions, bargain collectively, go on strike or criticize the government.

After Colombia, the Philippines had the highest rate of murdered trade unionists, with 33 killed last year. There also were 201 death threats against trade unionists in 2007. (Click here to read the report.)
