Subject:

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

The trade package scheduled for consideration by the Senate is a bad deal for America's working families.

Granting the Bush administration Fast Track trade negotiating authority is the wrong thing to do. This authority will produce only more flawed trade agreements that will drain good jobs from this country at the time of highest economic insecurity and greatest manufacturing job loss in decades.

Although the Fast Track legislation mentions the words "labor" and "environment," it does nothing to ensure that enforceable standards will be incorporated into trade agreements or to protect our trade laws like Section 201, which has aided America's steelworkers.

While increasing assistance for workers laid off by trade is a good thing to do, it still doesn't make this Fast Track bill any better. I urge you to strongly oppose the trade package.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Stop Fast Track!

Congressional leaders and President George W. Bush are pushing Fast Track legislation that would allow trade agreements to move through Congress with little opportunity for debate and no opportunity for modification. The proposal before Congress explicitly would prohibit the addition of enforceable protection for workers' rights and the environment in Fast-Tracked agreements. A coalition of union members, environmentalists, consumers and other activists have come together to demand that Congress include protections for working families and the environment as a part of any Fast Track agreement.
