Tell Labor Secretary Elaine Chao to enforce health and safety rules on the West Coast docks.

After the 10-day lockout on West Coast ports, longshoremen face dangerous conditions with a massive backlog of cargo waiting to enter and exit the ports. At the same time, the employer wants them to work as fast as possible. Send a fax to Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. Tell her to enforce safety and health rules on the West Coast docks.

Subject: Put Safety Inspectors On The Docks!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to request your help to ensure the safety and health of West Coast longshore workers as they return to work after the 10-day lockout imposed by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA).

Longshoring is a very hazardous job and the PMA's lockout has created a severe cargo backlog and dangerously congested conditions on the docks. These extreme conditions make their jobs even more dangerous. Safety and health rules and laws must be followed and enforced.

I request that you instruct the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to place federal OSHA inspectors on the docks immediately to monitor the conditions and enforce regulations where the federal government has jurisdiction, and to stay on the docks until the cargo backlog is cleared.

Sincerely,
