Urgent: Tell House Republican Leaders 'Don't Leave Jobless Workers Behind'

The leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives are ready to adjourn Friday without extending unemployment aid for 800,000 jobless workers who will lose their benefits Dec. 28. Send a fax to House Republican leaders right now. Tell them to schedule a vote on the Senate-approved extension of unemployment benefits.

Subject: Don't Leave Jobless Workers Behind

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am outraged at your failure to extend unemployment benefits to hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers who will see their benefits expire on Dec. 28--three days after Christmas. Unless the House takes up and passes the bipartisan Senate-approved measure extending federal emergency unemployment benefits for three months beyond the current Dec. 28 cut-off date, an estimated additional 90,000 unemployed workers EVERY WEEK will run out of their regular benefits and they will have no jobs or federal emergency benefits to fall back upon.

As it stands now, the House plan to go home for the rest of the year on Nov. 22 without extending benefits is a moral tragedy--a more revealing measure of your common decency than any other act this year. These tens of thousands of unemployed workers--already victimized by a stagnant economy--will have no other options after their benefits expire. How can the House head home for the holidays while destroying the holidays for desperate workers? How can President Bush do absolutely nothing for these jobless workers?

I urge you to immediately schedule a vote today before the House adjourns on this measure.

Sincerely,
