Our county executive, Chris Collins always said he
would run government like a business. What Collins meant was,
his positions would be driven by the profit-over-people business
model of government which has not promoted "good jobs" or
quality community services.
Examples: Collins refuses
to hire full-time county workers forcing new employees to work
39 hours a week for only part-time benefits, which are half of
their full-time co-workers. This is a purposeful
indignity to the workers, their families and all
unions.
Collins also suspended the apprenticeship law. A law
that: provides skills to new workers entering the job market,
lowers construction cost, saves lives and ultimately provide
productive middle class jobs. Collins supports the efforts of
the union busting ABC (Associated Builders & Contractors
Inc).
The Buffalo News has reported that Collins has targeted
democratic legislators for defeat in order to turn the
legislature over to a super majority that he can control.
It's not surprising since our democratic legislators have
advocated policies that support and protect our middle class.
Some examples:
- They bravely supported prevailing and living wage standards
and apprenticeship programs by stopping Collins' plan to
continue allowing local businesses to spend tax dollars however
they want.
- They have supported fair contracts for all unions who make
up the county workforce, and are committed to working with labor
throughout our community to find win-win solutions for working
families.
- By passing the Green Building Act, they are taking the path
to a green economy and creating jobs.
- Knowing that 69% of the public supports the Employee Free
Choice Act, they proudly supported a resolution that supports a
worker's right to form a union and a voice in the workplace.
They relayed that support to our WNY congresspersons.
Our local
elections involve all of in us in the labor movement who:
promote
economic and social justice in our communities.
We need to vote for candidates who support
the issues that will create and protect good middle class jobs,
keep our communities safe and healthy, and use our hard earned
tax dollars transparently for community benefit.
On Tuesday,
November 3rd, please consider voting for
labor's endorsed
candidates.
