Greetings,

Reminder.....

Join Jobs with Justice and Real Change as we gather the last signatures for I-100 and say

NO to a NEW JAIL

Help end the exploitation of homeless and low-income African-American and Latino workers who are unfairly targeted to occupy this possible new jail.

Where: City Hall, 4th Ave. & James St.
When: July 22nd, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (lunch trucks will be available)

What: A rally for Initiative 100 which is nearing the signature gathering deadline and is getting ready to show the city the breadth of community support behind I-100 and the broad resistance to a new jail. We want schools not jails - we want to invest in people not prisons.

Help save good union jobs that keep people out of jail and prisons. Fund schools, community colleges, universities, community health care clinics, hospitals, human services and diversion programs not a new jail.

Background:

Over the past 6 months the I-100: No New Jail campaign has been an effective tool of political power.  Recently, City Councilmember Tim Burgess formally asked King County for an extension to their jail contract; King County interim Executive responded by granting the city 3 additional years to allow time to explore all possible options; and King County Executive candidate Dow Constantine has said that if elected, he would work towards a 10 year extension - which the city has said would be enough time to put their plans to build a new jail on hold.  Change is coming, and I-100 has helped usher it in.

The campaign has come along way... lets celebrate the thousands of people who have said: No New Jail!  Please join us July 22nd to honor this hard work and to be the paradigm shift our city desperately needs.  It is time we readdress our system of incarceration; invest in people and the kind of jobs that build our communities. Be there next Wednesday to be apart of this change!
