Greetings, Join APALA and Jobs with Justice for an EFCA Labor Day Action! When: September 7th, noon to 1:30pm Where: Lower Woodland Park (N 50 th St and Woodland Park Ave N) What: MLK County Labor Council is hosting a Labor Day Picnic where we will be flyering and targeting US Representatives on why Asian Pacific Islander communities and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communties benefit from the passage of EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act). Background: Jobs with Justice, APALA (Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance) and Pride At Work have been collaborating within the API and LGBTQ communities around the Employee Free Choice Act and why these two communities would benefit from it's passage. Fifty nine percent of union workers receive health care coverage. Currently, only 50% of API workers have health care and LGBTQ workers statistically have a lower percentage of health care coverage than the mainstream population. Fifty percent of women API workers are low-wage workers. Immigrants are targeted for deportation by employers when they try to organize. The Employee Free Choice Act coupled with the Employee Non-Discrimination Act would provide the legal protection for LGBTQ workers against employer discrimination. Overall, the Employee Free Choice Act would provide important protection in the workplace and would allow API and LGBTQ workers a better work life through better wages, protection from discrimination and access to employer health care insurance.
